I’m worried about Jesus,” she says…

Worried about Jesus?

She’s 5 years old…

And blurts out her worry while we’re playing a game with her three-year-old brother.

It’s a silly game…

The kind of game that only makes sense to grandchildren and grandparents…

Her brother runs as fast he can around the coffee table.

She and I sit in chairs at opposite ends of the table.

As he runs past each of us…

We put out our legs to stop him.

He giggles…

Pushes our legs out of the way…

And runs on.

“You’re worried about Jesus?” I ask.

‘Yes.  He died, you know.”

For an instant, the inflection in her voice…

The solemn look on her face…

Make her seem far more adult than kindergartner…

My grandpa heart sighs.

“Jesus died on the cross,” she continues.

“So, I’m worried about Him.”

“But,” I say, “he’s alive again.”

“And he’s sitting in heaven right next to God.”

She smiles…

“Good.  Then I don’t have to worry about Jesus.”

At five, she’s noticing the world around her in a whole new way…

And finding things to worry about.

“Wow,” she says staring at a picture high on the wall…

“How did it get that high?”

“I have a very tall ladder.”

“It must be a thousand feet tall!” she says.

Then her face turns solemn.

“Did you fall?”

A little later she starts down the stairs to play in the basement…

She stops and turns back toward me…

Her face has that solemn look again.

“Will you still live here next summer?” she asks.

Last summer, we moved to a new house to live closer to her.

But if we moved once….

We might move again.

Something else to worry about.

The more she sees of the world…

The more she worries.

She’s growing up…

And becoming more and more like the adults in her life.

We Hear of wars…

And oppression…

And we worry

 We hear of drought…

And famine…

And we worry

We hear of the misdeeds of our leaders…

And we worry.

We see politicians leading in directions with which we disagree.

And we worry.

We worry about the troubles of this world…

Forgetting Jesus said…

In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”  John 16:33

We are anxious…forgetting we can take our worries directly to God…

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:6-7

We worry because we seek the wrong things…

We seek the rewards of the earthly kingdom in which we live…

Forgetting Jesus’ admonition…

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.  Matthew 6:33-34
