Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

You Do Not Know What Tomorrow Will Bring

… you do not know what tomorrow will bring … James 4:14

“Bubbles!” shouts the three-year-old…

“Let’s go outside and blow bubbles!”

“Everybody get your coats,” I call.

The 5-year-old finds her coat immediately…

The three-year-old can’t find his coat anywhere…

I can’t find it either…

Neither can my wife.

Maybe he left it in his mom’s car.

We improvise…

You do not know what tomorrow will bring

And everybody has a good time.

We’ve dealt with Today’s surprises…

But what will tomorrow bring?

Take a close look at the pictures above.

See any snow on the ground?

The weather forecasters say we might get a day or two of snow…

Maybe two or three inches total.

I would like to say to them…

“Even you have no idea what tomorrow will bring.”

We had nine straight days of snowfall.

Did God provide more than two or three inches of snow?

Look at the mound of snow on our patio table…

You do not know what tomorrow will bring

And decide for yourself.

With the snow…

It might be a little more difficult to stand in the yard and blow bubbles.

But now there are snowmen to make…

Snow forts to build…

Hills to slide down…

Unexpected reasons to shout with the Psalmist…

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.  Psalm 118:24

Still….

God tells us…

“You do not know what tomorrow will bring …”

And not all days are filled with sunrise snowflakes and bubbles…

Sometimes…

God allows negative consequences into the days He has made…

Consequences much more serious than a lost coat or unexpected snow.

How do we cope when evil seems to win?

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Where do we turn for help on those days?

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?  My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.  Psalm 121:1-2

How do we cope when all that’s left is faith?

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.  Hebrews 11:1

Perhaps…

By remembering God’s promise to be with us always…

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5

Perhaps…

By remembering that just as God tells us that “…You do not know what tomorrow will bring …”

He promises that we cannot imagine the glory that will follow…

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”  1 Corinthians 2:9
