Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

Ever Been Afraid to Accept God’s Best?

afraidPhil walked into his office, closed the door and sat down at his desk.

He faced a difficult decision…

He remembered the day it all began…

A year ago, the president of the company called him to his office.  Nothing unusual.  As the head of a major department he and the president met often.

But what the president said next surprised him…

“Phil, you’ve done a great job running your department.”

Use of the past tense “done” caught his attention immediately.  Was he being fired?

“It’s time for you to move on.”

Where was this conversation going?

“I’d like you to become executive vice president and take over the daily operations of the whole company.”

“Move your office next to mine…”

“Find somebody to replace you as the head of your current department…”

“Congratulations!”

He had been afraid one minute; elated the next….

Today, he had a very different meeting with the president….

“Phil, I’ve been very patient.  It’s been a year.

You’re still in your departmental office downstairs.  You haven’t hired anybody for your old position.

Anytime you do something related to your new role, it’s very good.

But you still spend most of your time running your old department.”

Phil, you have a decision to make….
Do you want to move fully into your new role, or do you want to leave the company?

Phil thought back over the past year.

He hadn’t found anybody good enough to take his place in the his old job.

In the new job, all of his fellow department heads reported to him.

He had to give them direction.  Some of them were very experienced.

Why would they listen to him?

He was comfortable in his old job.

He was afraid of his new job; afraid he would fail…

What direction should he take?

Finally he made his decision.

That night Phil went home and told his wife he quit his job.

There was no celebrating that night.

Can we be the same way with God…

Afraid to follow Him when he leads us in a new direction?

Can we be like the Israelite’s, afraid to enter the Promised Land?

But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”  Numbers 13:31

Why are we afraid?

Is it because we don’t really believe that….

…my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.  Philippian’s 4:19

Have we not been…

Fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Romans 4:12

Do we forget that God has already given us the ultimate victory?

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

So that now we can…

Be strong and courageous… for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
