“This song is called ‘Hit Me with Your Best Shot” he said, and started to play…
While thirty or forty thousand people at the Fourth of July fireworks ignored him.
They were busy, taking their own best shot at what mattered to them…
A dad threw his kids high into the air…
As soon as he caught them and set their feet on the ground, they raised their arms back up to him…
“Again!”
Taking his best shot at being a dad…
Overhead, planes descended to the nearby airport…
I listened to air traffic control on a smart phone app…
“…158 cleared to land on 10 Center…maintain your airspeed as much as possible.
“We’re having a busy night, here.”
“After landing make a high speed turn on…”
An air traffic controller taking his best shot at getting people on the ground safely …
Not far from us, a large group of people sat in an area marked off by red, white and blue balloons…
One thing made them different from all the other groups at the fireworks display…
There were no children with them.
Everywhere else, kids chased each other, ate festival food, and played games…
Seemed strange at a family event…
Just then, a man and woman walked up to the group…
They split and went in different directions…greeting each person…shaking each one’s hand.
Each person stood as they approached…
Soon the whole group was standing.
Business people…
Taking their best shot at networking and impressing the boss.
The business people, the singer, the dad, the air traffic controller…
They were all easily identifiable by what they said and did…
So then, you will recognize them by their fruit. John 7:20
What fruits do we display to let everyone know we are followers of Christ?
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
Perhaps we should start by taking our best shot…
Our best shot at love…
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35
But I say to you, love your enemies and bless the one who curses you, and do what is beautiful to the one who hates you, and pray over those who take you by force and persecute you. Mathew 5:44
