Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

Distracted by the World

I can’t write today’s post…

Distracted by the world

I am distracted.

I’ve started several times…

But after a sentence or two…

My mind wanders.

Glancing up over the computer screen…

I see the blank wall on the other side of the room.

“You ought to put a picture on that wall,” my daughter says.

She’s right.

I’ll look for one online now…

Twenty minutes later….

No picture found.

Maybe I should start writing again.

Where was I in the post?

Maybe I need to get up and walk around the house to clear my mind…

“Focus,” I tell myself…

“Focus on today’s post.”

But…

As I walk past the front window…

I see a neighbor drive by a in new car.

Nice car, I think…

I am focused again.

But not on the post.

Hurrying back to my computer, I look up the car.

Wow.

It has nice options.

Twenty minutes later, I look at my watch…

Almost lunchtime.

Maybe I’ll be more focused after I eat.

Nice thought, but by mid afternoon I am still struggling.

“I’m trying to write a post about staying focused on God,” I tell my wife.

Then I tell her about my distractions.

“That’s your post,” she says.

She’s right.

The post was supposed to be about how easily we can be distracted by the world …

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.  1 John 2:15

About how those distractions keep us from spending our one and only life doing what God wants…

We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. John 9:4

About how those distractions turn our minds from things of God…

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. Romans 8:5

My actions today show how easily I am distracted by the world.

All I can say is thank you, God.

Thank you for telling us all where to refocus our thinking…

…whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.  Philippians 4:8

Reminding us to renew our minds to focus on your will…

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.  Romans 12:2

Reminding us  that we need not be distracted by the world …

Calling us to to focus on You alone…

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10
