Are you an adventurer? A story of three everyday adventures…
and the one adventure that truly matters…
Adventure #1
The phone rang…
I was almost asleep…
“You have to go see the moon.” my daughter said.
“It’s low on the horizon. It’s big , it’s orange, and it’s beautiful…
Abandoning my plans for sleep, I looked out the window.
No moon in sight.
I walked into the street….
Still couldn’t see it… houses in the neighborhood blocked the view.
Wearing my slippers and talking to my daughter on the cell phone, I got into the car and drove out of the neighborhood. As I turned a corner, the moon filled my windshield.
It was big, orange and beautiful…
Adventure #2
The searchlight bounced off the clouds in the sky…
“Wonder where that’s coming from?” my dad asked.
“Let’s follow it!” my five year old voice called from the back seat of the car.
And we did…
The local car dealer was having a sale…
A little disappointing. But we had been on an adventure
Adventure #3
Driving home on a recent morning, I noticed a large cloud of smoke on the horizon. What could it be?
Abandoning my drive home, I followed it.
As I got closer, the cloud changed from black to grey and then disappeared.
It had been what they call a “prescription burn” in a nearby forest preserve, intentionally burning off last year’s growth of weeds and grasses.
A little disappointing, but worth the adventure.
The Real Adventure…
“Follow me”, Jesus says…
If only we have the faith to abandon our plans…
“You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth.”
Luke 18:22-23
And the adventure begins..
If only we have the faith to take the first step without knowing where it leads…
“Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
A step taken even when we have questions…
Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us? Mathew 19:27
If only we will follow…we will be on the one path that leads to true adventure…
for apart from me you can do nothing John 15:5
And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. Mathew 4:19
