…not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing… Hebrews 10:25
“My GPS,” He said laughing…
He’d answered the exact question I’d asked…
“What brings you to church today?”
“Or maybe,” he continued, “I should say my DPS!”
Huh?
“You know, my Divine Positioning System.”
“You’re not going to believe this, but last week I put a client’s address into my GPS. I must have put in a wrong number, because I ended up at this church. I drove around the parking lot for a while and decided to come back on Sunday.”
With an answer and a story like that one, I wondered what other people would say…So I kept asking…
“What brings you here today?”
“My boots! I left them here last Sunday and I came back to look for them.”
“What brought you to this church the first time?”
“My car. And a bad alarm clock.”
“We went to a church on the other side of town, but we overslept. On the way to that church I realized we’d never get there in time. I pulled into this parking lot to turn around without even realizing it was a church. Then I saw the sign. My wife and I decided to try it.”
“That was thirty years ago. We’ve been here ever since.”
Thirty years…
Why go to church at all… let alone for thirty years?
What do we get from going to church with other people?
As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12
Maybe we should go to church not only because of what we get from it but for what we give to others…
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing… Hebrews 10:24-25
Need another reason to go to church?
How about because that’s what Jesus did…
He came to Nazareth where he had been reared. As he always did on the Sabbath, he went to the meeting place. Luke 4:16
