The bedroom door shakes from the impact…
The handle rattles…
The hallway fills with noise…
My eyes blink open.
The room is dark…
Not surprising since the clock says 4:45 AM.
The door handle rattles again…
My wife and I are the only two people in the house…
But I’m not worried…
I know exactly who is making the noise…
It is one of our two cats….
The one who got straight A’s in the class titled…
“How to Wake up your humans at the same time every day.”
We forgot to tell her we set the clocks back an hour last night…
Calmly I turn over and try to go back to sleep…
The door bangs…
The handle rattles…
Gracie the cat fills the hallways with her howls…
Suddenly I am no longer so calm…
Opening the door, I start hissing like a cat….
Gracie starts to run away…
Then stops a few feet down the hallway…
Maybe I should throw in a growl for good measure …
I growl and run after her…
“Aversion therapy!” I rationalize….
The cat will never do this again.
”Wow do you look stupid!” says a small, silent voice in my head…
The cat retreats from the doorway…
I can’t see which cat it is in the dark…
But I know it’s Gracie…
I know it is Gracie, because I know Gracie.
I have spent years with her.
Later walking through the kitchen…
I glimpse a cat perched on top of the cabinet over the refrigerator…
I don’t even have to look…
I know it is Gracie’s brother George…
I know because I know George…
I know George because I have spent a lot of time with him…
If a cat jumps up behind me on a chair… it is George…
If a cat brings me toys to play with… it is Gracie.
I know these cats because I have been with them most of their lives…
How much more time God has spent with us…
God has always been with us…
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, Jeremiah 1:5
God will always be with us
…God has said, “I will never leave you or let you be alone.” Hebrews 13:5
Always with us, because He loves us…
He knows every little thing about us…
Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Luke 12:7
He knows what’s in our hearts before we tell him…
Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. Psalm 139:4
God knows us …
And He loves us…
Loves us completely…
For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. Whoever puts his trust in God’s Son will not be lost but will have life that lasts forever. John 3:16
