Hiding our sin from God –Surely the darkness will hide me-psalm 139:11
“Can we go to the mall?”
Dad sighs…
“You can’t go until you clean your room.”
His daughter rolls her eyes.
But her friend nudges her, and smiles.
“No worries,” says the friend. “I’ll help!”
The girls run upstairs.
Dad hears noises from the bedroom.
“Wow,” he thinks, “They’re working hard.”
His phone rings…
Face Time…
“Hi Dad!”
“Look at the room,” his daughter says and moves the camera in a circle.
No sign of the clothes that were stacked on the bed…
The Books that had covered the floor have vanished…
“How did you finish so fast?” Dad asks.
“Well… there are two of us…”
“Can we go to the mall now?”
“Sure!”
The girls race down the stairs.
He shakes his head as they go out the door.
They really surprised him.
He’d expected an argument over cleaning the room.
Smiling, he goes upstairs to admire their work.
At the top of the stairs, he stops.
Clothes that once covered his daughter’s bed…
Now litter the hallway.
Books that had formed an obstacle course on the bedroom floor…
Now form a perfect barrier across the hallway.
I listen as my friend tells me this story and think how like that teenager I am…
Trying to hide my sins from God…
God, who knows everything in all the world…
For he looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens Job 28:24
God, who knows my every thought and action…
you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Psalm 139:1-6
God from whom there is no hiding…
Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you. Psalm 139:7-12
How foolish to think I can hide my sin from God…
Who knows the sin of each of us…
Knows it better than we will ever know it…
And loves us still…
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
