My wife and I were driving to our favorite restaurant…

You know the one…

It’s called, “I don’t care, wherever you want to go.”

Suddenly the conversation turned from gastronomical to theological.

“What do you think it really means,” my wife asked, “to put God first?”

I was getting ready to give some pious, superficial answer…

Because I didn’t have a clue about the real answer…

Then I remembered something that had happened in that same car just a few days before…

I was pulling into the parking lot at work when the satellite radio channel started playing Toby Mac’s “Steal My Show”.

What does it really mean to let God steal our show?

Steal our life? 

Does it mean letting God “supercharge” what we’re already doing?

Or does it mean giving everything back to God?

Giving Him the things that mean the most to us?

And waiting to see what He will do with them?

Isaac was the long-prayed-for son God granted Abraham, when his wife was too old to have children.

Isaac was a dream…

Isaac was a gift from God.

And then God asked Abraham to give Isaac back to him…

To sacrifice Isaac on an altar.

…God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering…” Genesis 22:2

Abraham was raising the knife, ready to kill Isaac…

But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” Genesis 22 9-11

In belief Abraham was willing to sacrifice Issac.

But God told Abraham that his belief… his faith… was the only sacrifice He wanted.

In his belief, Abraham had put himself on the altar…

Had given all of himself to God.

That’s faith…

That’s putting God first.
