Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

I’d Give Up Anything for Jesus–Except My Dignity!

The cafeteria was crowded…

Hundreds of people …

All wanting to eat before the church service started.

As a new volunteer, I watched the most experienced team member.

She was in her 70’s, and walked on painful knees.

But she moved constantly, cleaning tables, talking with people, throwing out garbage.

“Should we do that?” I asked my mentor.

“I don’t do garbage,” she said….I followed her direction.

After all, picking up garbage and dirty plates didn’t sound like a lot of fun!

But I kept watching that senior volunteer, seeing the impact she had on everyone she met.

“Shame” is the only feeling I can describe when I consider my attitude in the context of the story of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet…

…so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.  After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him….John 13:4-5

I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.   John 13:15

“I don’t do that.”

An easy answer.

Based only on personal vanity…

As Len Sweet asks in a classic postwhat if Jesus had said, “I don’t do Crosses?”
