It is a very long staircase…
My granddaughter and I were headed down the stairs on our way to the two year old classroom at our church.
I could have carried her down them very quickly. But she’s two, and as you know if you have two year-olds in your family, two is a very independent age…
She counted each step as she took it…
“One…”
“Two…
Three…
Four…
Six…
Five…
Eleven…
I wondered how she’d react when we got to the room. She’s less hesitant every time she visits, but two year olds can be unpredictable.
When we reached the two year old room, a volunteer said to her, “We’re painting today. Would you like to come in and paint?”
“Yes!” She smiled a smile that filled her whole face and ran into the room.
Is that what Jesus means when He says we should enter His kingdom as little children?
And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven Mathew 18:3
“Hi, welcome to my house”, he says to us. “Follow me. There’s a wonderful picture we can paint together.”
Jesus invitation to us. So simple. Yet so profound. What fabulous adventures will He lead us on if we shout a childlike “Yes!”, and run after Him?
Adventures beyond even our imagination…
He is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, Ephesians 3:20
When we picked up our granddaughter, she was still smiling. Using her newly acquired two year old vocabulary she told us all about it…
“I painting,” she said. “I dancing! I singing!”
Then she asked, “Cookie?”
“Yes!” my wife said. My granddaughter started another one of those big two year old grins.
All that joy for the reward of some water colors, a little music and a cookie…
