Standing outside the theater where we were both volunteering, she watched me drive up and park.
After I went into the theater she walked toward my car.
Appearing to gaze casually into the distance she quickly looked into the back seat. It was empty. She smiled and walked into the theater.
Sitting in the dressing room, she realized she still didn’t really know the answer to her question.
I was onstage in costume for a dress rehearsal. My street clothes were nearby.
She pulled my wallet from my pocket and opened it.
Suddenly she heard people in the hallway. Rehearsal was over. What if someone saw her? Would they think she was a thief?
She stuffed the wallet back into my pants pocket, and left the dressing room smiling at what she had not found.
Several months later, she told me the story about the car and the wallet.
She was looking for signs I was married. Was there a child seat in the car? Were there pictures of a wife and children in my wallet?
You could say she was following a biblical principle:
Desire without knowledge is not good– how much more will hasty feet miss the way!
Proverbs 19:2
If you were to look today for a picture of my wife, you would find her picture and the car seat would be for our grandchildren.
My future wife wanted know something about me before we took steps toward a relationship…
How do we learn to know Jesus?
Have you ever heard S.M. Lockridge’s, “Do you Know Him?”
Talking about Jesus, he begins, “The Bible says…”
“The Bible says”. No wallet snooping or back seat gazing required to know Jesus.
Want to know Jesus? Start with the Bible…
Here’s part of Lockridge’s famous “Do You Know Him?”…
The Bible says my King is a seven-way king….
- He’s the King of the Jews; that’s a racial king….
- He’s the King of Israel; that’s a national King….
- He’s the King of Righteousness…
- He’s the King of the Ages….
- He’s the King of Heaven…
- He’s the King of Glory…
- He’s the King of Kings, and He’s the Lord of Lords.
That’s my King. Well…I wonder, do you know Him?…David said, “The Heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork. My King is a sovereign King. No means of measure can define His limitless love. No far seeing telescope can bring into visibility the coastline of His shoreless supply. No barrier can hinder Him from pouring out His blessings.
- He’s enduringly strong…
- He’s entirely sincere…
- He’s eternally steadfast…
- He’s immortally graceful…
- He’s imperially powerful…
- He’s impartially merciful…
If you’ve never heard Lockridge or if it’s been a while since you heard him, listen to him here
Want to know Jesus? Paul tells us…
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17
