Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

What Does It Mean to Follow Jesus?

It‘s late….

I should be in bed….

Maybe I’ll switch through the channels one more time…

There it is… the old movie gag about “Walk this way”

You remember it…

From Mel Brooks to the Marx Brothers, movie characters took the suggestion literally.

Ever wonder why we don’t take it more literally when Jesus says “Follow me”?

We immediately think He means “follow my example”.

But could we find additional meaning if we also took the command to follow Jesus more literally?

What if we assumed that we literally follow Jesus into every room and every situation all day long?

That He stands just ahead of us in the cafeteria line?

That He sits next to us in the classroom or at the conference table?

That His desk is right next to ours in the office?

How would we be different in the meeting or the class or at the lunch table?

What if every time we arrived at a difficult place, we assumed Jesus was there too?

That he would answer if we asked Him for help?

What does it cost to follow Jesus?

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me  Matthew 16:24

What do we gain?

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”   John 8:12

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.  John 3:16-17

What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?  Mark 8:36
