Then take care lest you forget the Lord, Deuteronomy 6:12
I remember…
I remember the day I stood at an altar in a church…
And watched the woman who would be my wife walk down the aisle…
Today I stand not at an altar but at the threshold of 40 years of marriage…
But I remember that day at the altar forty years ago…
And know that it was a gift from God…
I remember…
When our baby girl was really a baby…
Today she is all grown up…
Married…
And there are new babies to love…
It is so easy to remember those events…
And forget the God who made them all.
And yet…
Perhaps one reason God gives us the gift of memory…
Is to remember Him…
To remember God …
And all the things He has done for us…
I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.… Psalm 77:11
To remember God …
And draw strength from His presence in our lives…
… for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
Perhaps also to remember God …
And dream of things to come.
Sound strange?
Consider…
As I remember God, and all the great things He has done in my life …
I realize that in my memory, I am still the father of that baby girl…
Still the young husband waiting at the altar…
And that’s when I wonder…
If God gave us the gift of memory not just to remember what He has done in the past…
But also as a glimpse of eternity…
The eternity we will spend with Him…
Where He will remove our pain and sorrow…
…There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4
And memory and anticipation will merge into a constant “now”…
For time itself will have vanished…
…With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 2 Peter 3:8

Bob, thank you so much for these reminders. I so need to read them. I’ve been ill so I’ve tried to save up to read a few at a time. Bless you, Paul, Beth & family.
Thanks for your kind words. So sorry to hear you are ill.
