I cannot show you what’s behind this door…
Well, I could…
But I won’t.
My closet is behind this door.
My closet is a mess.
It is so full I can barely open the door…
Why is my closet so full?
It is NOT because I’ve filled it with a whole lot of new clothes…
It is NOT because I have some enormous clothes budget…
It is because I cannot throw anything away.
For instance…
Consider this belt and shirt…
The belt is a size I have not worn in some time…
(Note: the phrase “in some time” can generally be translated as “in many years”.)
The shirt is slim fit.
Let’s just say I have “outgrown” the shirt along with the belt.
But when I see the belt and the shirt, they remind me of the past…
They bring me comfort.
I wonder…
Is my spiritual closet filed with the same kind of comfort-makers?
Do I cling to the beliefs of my spiritual childhood?
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 1 Corinthians 13:11
Do I seek comfort from those beliefs instead of from God himself?
Do I forget that He is…
…the God of all comfort… 2 Corinthians 1:3
Is my spiritual closet so full of junk from the past…
That I sometimes miss what God is doing today?
“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? … Isaiah 43:18-19
How much faith does it take to clean my spiritual closet?
To abandon my faith in my own beliefs…
And exchange it for faith in God alone?
“… if you have faith as small as a mustard seed… Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20
