Empty…
An empty house.
Emptied of…
Clothes laid out to be worn…
Tables and chairs and sofas where the family gathered…
Dishes that held warm family meals…
Books and DVD’s that brought the family together…
All gone.
The home…
Once filled with fun and laughter…
Sadness and tears…
Is now just an empty house.
In the garage…
A trash hauler sorts through what’s left behind…
A fishing tackle box…
With just a few weights and an old tube of bug repellent…
Waiting for the biting flies…
For the mosquitoes that swarm along the river…
Waiting for the fisherman who will never come.
A couple of weeks ago…
The fisherman died.
The trash hauler moves quickly.
Throwing everything into one of two containers…
Trash headed for the dump…
Metal headed for the scrap yard where he’ll sell it for a few dollars.
The scrap hauler finishes his work.
All that’s left is the fisherman’s prized twenty-year-old car…
It be gone too will soon.
Things accumulated over a lifetime…
Going…
Going…
Gone.
Reminding us of Jesus’ call to empty our purses and pockets and houses and hearts of worldly treasures…
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. Matthew 6:19
To turn away from things of this world…
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:2
To fill our souls instead with the treasure of God….
…store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:20
For our earthly home will fade away…
…this world is not our permanent home; Hebrews 13:14
Our home in this world will become a mere empty house …
But our soul will live forever…
Filled with the abundant love of God…
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
