I thought it was a lousy sermon…
It was years ago and I was listening to a sermon in a church in another state…
“Wait for God” said the minister…
“Do things on his timetable, not yours…”
“God’s never late!” he said, and quoted scripture…
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
2 Peter 3:9
It all sounded so good…
Good for Sunday morning …
But Meaningless Monday through Friday…
My weekday pace was hectic…
I lived by the clock, my calendar and my watch…
Couldn’t be late for the airplanes that took me where I needed to go…
Couldn’t miss the meetings that crowded my calendar…
I laughed all week about the impractical church message …
Which is a way of saying the message never really left my mind…
The boss must have known what I was thinking when he called a meeting…
“The annual client party is tonight.” he said to everyone.
“Don’t spend too much time talking with any one person!”
“Circulate…”
“Talk to everyone, but don’t talk to anyone too long…”
“Keep your eyes on your watches!”
“Keep every conversation under two minutes…”
“Then move on to the next person…”
I had a lot of conversations that night…
Not one of them was meaningful…
I couldn’t remember any of them forty-eight hours later…
Maybe that Sunday’s message hadn’t been so impractical after all.
The church message and the week that followed, came to mind recently when a blog reader left a comment on an Everyday Servant post on Google+
+mamahen Robin shared what a teacher once told her…
“Welcome to the ministry of Christ…”
“Prepare to open your wallet…”
“Make room at your table…”
“And throw away your watch.”
Will we throw away our watches this week?
Will we honor God by being totally present…
- With every person He brings before us?
- In every moment He creates?
Will we worship the god of our calendars and goals and watches?
Or will we will we throw away our watches and put God first?
It’s up to each one of us…
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33

Always God first. Easier said than done, but if we put Him first, everything else falls into place.
I must say that I’m a slave to time and my calendar. And my response when I’m running late… well, let’s just say that it’s very telling. Thanks for this much needed message to listen to His prompting more than the tick of the clock. Great post!
Thanks for your comment, Karen, and for stopping by to read the post! Isn’t it easy to be a believer in the Gospel of the Holy Calendar?
