I know what God wants me to do…
and it’s not laundry.
That’s what I tried to tell my wife as she left for an all-day Saturday meeting.
”The detergent and softener are in the cabinet over the washer…”
“This is the pile of dirty clothes….”
I wanted to ask so many questions…
- How much detergent?
- How much softener?
- The washer has all these different cycles. Which one should I use?
“Gotta go! I’m late!”
She was out the door…
Need someone to cook?
No problem.
Need someone to vacuum and clean the house?
Done.
But laundry?
Today?
You see, there’s a game on TV …
The game is starting.
Where’s the popcorn?
Where’s the soda?
Halftime.
My wife will be home soon.
She’ll walk through the door expecting to see a pile of clean laundry.
God, isn’t there something else you’d like me to do?
Something more interesting?
Something more important?
“if it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, go on out and sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures; sweep streets like Handel and Beethoven composed music; sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry; (Go ahead) sweep streets so well that all the host of heaven and earth will have to pause and say, “Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well.” Martin Luther King
Maybe any task becomes important when it’s performed from the right spirit…
…clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12-14
Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and love…
They all seem like pretty good reasons to do a little laundry.
