Why did God make weeds?
I don’t know.
What I do know is that I hate weeds…
I hate pulling weeds…
Spraying weeds with herbicide…
I hate weeds.
Did I mention that already?
Don’t get me started about thistles…
I spent an hour the other day battling thistles along the back of our yard.
Pulling thistles…
Digging thistles…
Spraying thistles with deadly, environmentally unfriendly chemicals. (Sorry. I was desperate.)
You have to keep an eye on thistles…
…be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8
The thistles I pulled a while ago…
Are growing back.
Just tiny little green sprouts so far….
But If I do not get them now…
They’ll turn into three foot monsters with little gold flowers…
Ready to seed the next generation of thistles…
I was digging out just such a monster the other day…
When my three year old granddaughter ran up to me.
“Stop!” she yelled.
“Don’t pull the flowers.”
“Flowers? They’re weeds.”
“They’re pretty!”
They don’t look pretty to me.
She’s focused on the blossoms…
I’m focused on the thorns…
God, why do you put weeds in my yard?
Why do you put weeds and trials in our lives?
Could it be to teach us to…
… rely not on ourselves but on God… 2 Corinthians 1:9
Could it be that what we see as the weeds of life…
Are carefully planted seeds…
Seeds ready to blossom in our souls…
…suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3-4
Blossom for all eternity…
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. Romans 8:18
For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18
How about you?
Have there been weeds in your life?
Obstacles?
Suffering?
Have they brought you closer to God?

I have wondered that so many times being raaaised on a farm and helping my Brother in his Tobacco field .I thought about that a lot. God why did you make weed’s?
I’ll bet you did! I visited a farm several weeks ago where they were “walking the bean fields” to cut out weeds. They were probably asking the same question.
I was just thinking about it last evening as I had to empty a pot full of weeds … You know the ones that propagate with one tiny part of the root and as I kept digging this pot I could see that the weeds had grow really deep, down to the bottom of the pot. I tthought of the parable of the wheat and the tares. I also thought how God our Father is faithful to those who seek Him in truth and he is always there to help us with our weaknesses. All we need to do is just ask and He does give us the grace to overcome everything. All glory be to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ alone, amen.
All glory to Him indeed! Thanks for your comments.
This is such a good article. Love the Scriptures! Blessings
