Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

Blessed Assurance

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine;    ~Fanny Crosby

“Assured…”

blessed assurance

Reads the license plate on his fancy car…

He thinks the word describes his future…

Successful insurance agent…

Plenty of money…

Commissions rolling in forever…

Good investments…

An assured retirement.

When people ask about the license plate…

He tells them the other meaning…

It’s a good sales tool.

He sells assurance, he tells them…

Assurance that everything will turn out OK…

Even when the unexpected happens.

He parks his car in front of his office.

Tomorrow he will sell the car.

When the office lease expires…

He’ll work from home.

He needs every dollar he can find.

The unexpected has happened to him.

One of his good investments was n in a fast food restaurant…

Profitable?

The first restaurant makes so much money he opens a second … then a third…and a fourth.

His restaurants bring in more money every month than he’s ever made in a year.

He looks into the future and sees a life of luxury…

Blessed assurance.

Then… the unexpected happens

A big burger chain opens a restaurant next to every one of his locations.

One by one his stores close.

He doesn’t have enough money to pay off the loans and leases…

His house is in foreclosure…

Bill collectors call every day.

Pressure.

Fear.

Uncertainty.

No blessed assurance in his circumstances…

“A fall from grace,” he thinks.

The thought shakes him…

It isn’t grace from which he has fallen…

He has toppled from a pedestal of his own making…

He remembers the words to the hymn…

“Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine…”

“…Jesus is mine…”

Nothing he ever does will change the true gift of grace…

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.  Ephesians 2:8-9

God will always be with him…

…Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you; Hebrews 13:5

And he will always be with God…

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 8:38-39

Assurance…

Blessed Assurance.
