Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

Only God Knows

I see the Drug store at the last minute…

It is You never know...on the left side of the road…

I am in the right lane…

Making  a rather daring move across three lanes of traffic, I pull into the drug store lot…

No, I’m not making an emergency medication run for a sick child…

I have suddenly been hit with what I am sure is a great idea…

My wife works about a half mile from the drug store.

I’ll buy her a greeting card and put it under the windshield wiper on her car.

She’ll be really surprised.  I’m never in the area and she doesn’t know I’m here today.

A few minutes later, with the card on the seat next to me,  I reach for a pen to write a note on the card.

I can’t find a pen…

No problem!  I’ll just put the unsigned card in the envelope and leave it on her car.

I’d love to say that my motives for leaving the card are unselfish.  And they are.  Mostly.

Still my imagination creates a truly thankful phone call from her …

“What a great thing to do!’ she says in my imaginary phone call.  “I’m so lucky to have a husband like you. Thank you so much…”

Aren’t Imaginary phone calls wonderful?

A few minutes after her workday ends, my phone rings…

I wait for the loving tone of voice and the generous “Thank you’s”  I imagined earlier…

Instead her voice sounds worried…

“Should I be freaked out?” she asks.

“Huh?”

“Today they told us somebody tried to abduct a woman in the employee parking lot last night.  She got away…”

“But I just found an unsigned card on my windshield.  Should I be worried?”

I told her what I had done.

She laughed a very relieved laugh…

She didn’t react the way I expected.

My expectations were built on what I knew…

what I knew was limited…

What we know is always limited.

Only God knows it all…

Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
    don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
    he’s the one who will keep you on track.
Don’t assume that you know it all.  Proverbs 3:5-6
