Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

Helping Others See God

Lost. I am lost.

LostI have been in this building many times before…

But I have never been in the basement.

The halls go on and on and twist and turn and lead from one closed door to another.

I am lost…

But I see salvation ahead!

Someone is walking toward me…

He is wearing a name badge.  He works here.  He must know the location of the the office I am trying to find.

I will break the universal code of guy-hood and ask for directions!

He brushes past me, eyes on the floor, talking on his cell phone…forcing me to jump out of his way as he walks through a narrow door.

Sighing, I continue on my quest.

Another person…

Another name badge…

Another chance for salvation!

She walks past me quickly, her gaze focused on an invisible point in the distance.

What a friendly place!

I want to leave as quickly as possible!

Sunday finds me in a very different building…

The church I attend.

I am volunteering…

Wearing a name badge…

There for the single purpose of making people feel welcome.

Walking very fast to get to where I am supposed to be, I stare at some invisible point in the distance.

Suddenly I hear someone behind me…

“Excuse me!  Excuse me!”

I stop and turn toward a family I had walked past without even noticing.

“Can you help us?” they ask.  “We’re a little lost.”

I think of my experience in the basement of that other building….

Of how lost I had felt…

Of how judgmental I had been of the people who wouldn’t help me.

Of how in this moment, I had been just like them.

Of how I had missed the mark set just a few days earlier by speaker and author Bob Goff…

“When people meet you, they should meet a little bit of heaven.”  Bob Goff

“A little bit of Heaven?”

What would that look like?

… love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23

Where can we find those heavenly qualities?

Surely not in ourselves, but in God, in His Spirit and His grace.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

2 Corinthians 12:9
