Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

I Did Not Need God!

“Judge not, and you will not be judged; Luke 6:37

I didn’t need God…

Well, I mean, of course I needed God…

in the generic sense…

I just didn’t need God at that precise moment.

I had things pretty well under control, thank you very much.

I couldn’t say the same thing for the family next to me in the theater.

Need God

My feet crunched over the popcorn they had spilled as I walked to my seat.

Popcorn was everywhere in front of their seats…

How could one family spill that much popcorn?

I imagined the parents saying to their kids…

“OK everybody! On the count of three turn your popcorn upside down. “

“One…

“Two…”

“Three!”

They certainly needed help from somebody!

Finally at my seat, I put my drink in the cup holder and set my popcorn on the floor while I took off my jacket.

Sitting down, watching the previews on the screen, I reached for the popcorn…

And knocked it over.

It was a small popcorn… but this theater is known for the large size of its snacks.

Popcorn carpeted the floor in front of my seat.

With a sigh, I picked up what was left of the popcorn…

A couple walked past me to their seats.

Crunch.  Crunch.

The man gave me a disgusted look.

I smiled back my best “Gee, sorry” smile…

He shook his head.

How did I start this post?

With the words, “I didn’t need God.”

How did I come to that conclusion?

By comparing myself to others

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think…Romans 12:3

By comparing myself to others on something as meaningless as spilled popcorn

God heard what really mattered…my frequent use of the first person personal pronoun

(Please don’t count the number of times the pronoun “I” appears in this post!)

God knew exactly what I needed at that moment…

Humility.

He gave it to me through a little spilled popcorn.

God knew I needed Him then.

He knows I need Him every minute.

And I do.

That’s why I’m glad he promised…

“I will never leave you nor forsake you …Hebrews 13:5
