Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

Remembering God

Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.  Psalm 25:4

I remember the sound this lamp made when I was growing up…

That’s right…

I remember the sound of the lamp…

It was an antique lamp sitting on an antique table in the front hall of an antique house.

(Please note: The word “antique” in the sentence above can best be translated as “old”.)

When anyone walked through the front hall, the old, rickety table… I mean the “antique” table… wobbled.

When the table wobbled, the lamp shook.

When it shook, the metal cap at its top rattled against the glass, making a sound like a small, out-of-tune bell…

Whenever I heard that sound, I knew someone was walking through the front hall…

More than once,  the sound of the lamp, announcing the unexpected arrival of a parent saved a child from certain doom.

After I grew up and moved away, I told my mother about my memories of the sound of the lamp…

She smiled, but didn’t say much.

The story brought back no memories for her…

She’d never heard the rattle of the lamp.

How she could have missed the sound?

For me it was as much a part of my memory of home as the smell of a favorite dinner cooking in the kitchen, or the glow of the lights on a long, dark winter night.

Maybe my mother tuned out the sound of the lamp because it was always there…

As I thought about that possibility…

I realized…

You can’t remember something you’ve never heard.

I wondered…

How often I do the same thing with God?

How often do I tune out God simply because He is always with me?

And if I don’t hear God, how will I remember Him?

How will I remember the path He wants He to follow?

Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Psalm 25:4-5

Maybe the key to hearing God…

To Remembering God…

Is simply to wait for Him…

for you I wait all the day long.

Wait silently…

Wait attentively…

Wait secure in the knowledge that even when our hearing fails and our memory fades, God will never forget His promises to us…

He has remembered His covenant forever, Psalms 105:8

“Never will I leave you;  never will I forsake you.”  Hebrews 13:5

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  John 3:16
