Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

Shadow of God

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High…

Shadow of God

Will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  Psalm 91:1

What a day…

What a lousy day…

Thankfully the work day is finished.

That’s not to say her work is finished.

She looks at her desk…

Lunch sits uneaten in a corner…

Organized stacks of paper fill every other inch of space…

Each stack a monument to yet another unfinished project.

She sighs.

The day is over…

The projects will just have to stay unfinished until tomorrow.

She is tired…

Stressed…

A little angry at some of the words people said today…

At some of the tasks they expected her to do.

“What’s the matter with them?” she thinks.

On her way home…

Her husband calls…

He’s getting ready to suggest they go out to eat…

She is so tired…

So discouraged…

“Got to go. I’ll be home soon,” she says…

And hangs up before he has a chance to say anything about dinner.

Her world seems dark.

Bleak.

Doesn’t anybody understand?

Finally, home.

Walking in the door, she looks at her cell phone…

Stops…

And stands staring at the picture on her lock screen.

A picture from the Hubble telescope…

A picture of worlds she cannot imagine…

Worlds she will never see except in pictures like this one…

She imagines the shadow of God …

The unchanging shadow of the eternal God passing across these worlds He created.

Realizes that all the problems of her day are but shifting shadows of a shadow world …

Realizes that God cares for her always…

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.  James 1:17

That no matter what earthly shadows she passes through…

God is there…

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, For you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.  Psalm 23:4

And that in the ever present shadow of God …

She will find protection and strength for her days in this shadow world…

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust.”  Psalm 91:2
