Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

Plugging into The Power of God

He loved Power.

And he loved to display it.

Early one morning with the blessing of his gatekeeper…”He’s ready for you now…”

I knocked on his door and walked into his office  for the first time.

Power of God

The door was thirty feet from his desk…

where he sat making notes on a document, seemingly unaware I had entered the room.

Without looking up, he spoke in a very low voice… almost a whisper….

I thought he said “Sit down.”

So I did…

In the only group of chairs in the room …

located near the door almost thirty feet from his desk.

Eventually he stopped writing and looked up at me across the vast expanse of his office.

He spoke in a voice so low it would have been hard to hear had I been sitting next to him.

When it became obvious that I couldn’t hear him, he raised his voice “I said, bring your chair over here!”

The chair was a large upholstered wing chair…

It weighed a lot…

Its back was over 6 feet tall.

It was not made to move…

But I drug it across the floor following marks in the carpet that made it clear I was not the first person to take this journey.

I reached his desk and sat down.

Still he spoke so quietly that I strained to hear him.

I am told there is a theory of personal power that recommends whispering as a way of gaining control over people and events…

Some call it the Power Whisper.

Power whisper…

A way for someone who holds a little power to take even more.

And then I thought of a Bible passage…

Where the One who holds the all the power of the universe…

Uses a whisper not to take power, but to give it…

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
The Lord said to him, “Go…”  1 Kings 19:11-12, 15

A quiet whisper.

If we listen…

If we hear…

He will give us the power of God to do His will.
