Playing in the restaurant parking lot…

Five years old…

Opening the door for diners as they arrive…

“Don’t go in there,” I say as I open the door…

“Don’t eat here today!”

“You’ll wait a long time!”

“They are really busy!”

And they were busy.

After my family had waited 3 or 4 minutes for our food…

An eternity for a five-year-old…

My mother surrendered…

“Yes, yes you can go open the door for people coming into the restaurant.”

It was another time and a very small town…

Even at five, I knew everyone coming in the door.

And I was anxious to pass on my knowledge about what they were about to encounter…

“They’re running out of tables!” I shouted to one family.

This time, everyone in the restaurant heard me.

Including my mother…

And the restaurant owner, who gave my mother “the look”.

My mother’s chair scraped against the bare wood floor as she moved it back from the table and stood…

Her heels clicked on the floor in a determined rhythm as she moved rapidly toward me.

Uh. Oh.

Even at five, I knew I was in trouble.

She reached down for my hand.

“Don’t say those things, Bobby!”

“But you always say I should tell the truth…”

Oh the times I’ve gotten in trouble “Telling the truth”.

How about you?

Maybe that’s because the truth we tell is just our own version of the truth…

Not based on the truth of God …

If only we would ask God for guidance…

Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.  Psalm 25:5

Then we would know…

The truth of God is found not in the correct recitation of a set of facts…

The truth of God is found in Christ alone…

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me  John 14:6

We would know…

And we would follow His truth through this life…

And into the next.
