Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

Waiting for the Lord

But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength Isaiah 40:31

“You’re hungry, Pops!”

Waiting for the lord

The three-year-old suddenly stops playing…

Stares at me with his impossibly big eyes…

Pulls himself up as tall as he can reach…

And continues in a very serious voice…

“You want a cookie!”

I do? Really?

Well…

Now that he mentions it…

“The chocolate chip cookies are in the kitchen.“Let’s get one!”

He knows exactly where to find the cookies…

And runs as fast as his three-year-old legs can carry him.

What a system he has for getting what he wants…

  1. He tells me that I want it.

  2. He runs off to do what he’d always planned to do.

Come to think of it…

That’s often the way I approach God when I want His approval…

“Dear God,” I’ll say, “I know what you want me to do…”

“So give me your strength to do it.”

And off I’ll run to do what I had already planned…

Could I be leaving out the most important step?

Maybe I should start by just asking God what He wants me to do…

Perhaps I should say something like this verse…

Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.  Psalm 25:4-5

And having asked, maybe I should do something radical…

Maybe I should do what the last part of the verse says…

And try waiting for the LORD ….

for you I wait all the day long…

And having waited, maybe I don’t even have to ask for God’s strength…

Maybe the strength of the lord comes in the waiting for the LORD and in the following of His way….

But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.  Isaiah 40:31
