He was so humble…
Everybody said so…
Even he said so, if only to himself.
Humility took a lot of work.
He looked in the mirror as he practiced his small self deprecating smile with eyes wide and a quick tilt of the head as if to say “Who, me?”
Lately he had taken his humility one step further.
Perhaps, he thought, one step too far…
When he was asked to take on new leadership roles, he had begun responding, “No, No. There really must be someone more talented.”
He’d have to rethink that one. Last week the fools had actually given the job to somebody else.
But it was important to be humble. Particularly, he thought, when you possessed so much talent.
And in his pride, masked by false humility, he excluded the need for God …
And the devil did grin, for his darling sin is pride that apes humility ~ Coleridge
The man who thinks he can live without others is mistaken; the one who thinks others can’t live without him is even more deluded.~Hasidic proverb
He was so humble…
Everybody said so…
He woke up each morning fearing the day. Fearing what would go wrong next.
That’s why he had turned down the promotion. Fear.
What if he took the new job and failed?
He hadn’t told them that of course.
He had just put on his familiar humble act and said “No”.
And in his fear, masked by false humility, he excluded the power of God from his life…
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power… ~2 Timothy 1:7
It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed ~Deuteronomy 31:8
