Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

Who But God Can Give Us the Power to Love?

greeting cards (2)Moving from frozen foods to dairy products, I found myself trapped in the greeting card aisle…

Not a place I normally linger…

But out of the corner of my eye, I saw a card.

It was humorous, but not outrageous; sentimental, but not mushy.  Just the kind of card my wife liked.

At home, I put away the groceries.  The card wasn’t in the first sack, or the second.  It wasn’t in the third sack or the fourth and final sack…

“That”, I said to myself, “is another fine example of your romantic prowess!”

The next morning, my wife took the milk out of the refrigerator.

”What’s this?” she asked.

A piece of paper was stuck to the moist side of the carton.  The missing card was found!

“Wow  I’m some husband.  Can’t even buy a card and get it home.”

“You are some husband!” she laughed.

I thought of how I had loved her through the years…

I loved her when…

  • We got engaged
  • We married
  • Our daughter was born
  • She had that scary surgery
  • I was sick and she took care of me
  • She absolutely did not want to move for my new job
  • We were making more money than we had ever expected
  • I lost my job, she lost hers, our investments took a nosedive and money was scarce

A guy who can’t even get a card home from the story clearly doesn’t have the power to make that kind of love work.

The strength and resources to make that kind of love happen can only come from God.

After all, who did Jesus rely on to give a gift of love to his disciples?

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. John 14:16-17
