Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

No Time to be Humble?

Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering-Romans 12:1

“While I’m out of town,” said her boss, “file everything in my office.”
humble

Files covered the boss’ desk…

Littered the floor …

Mounded in each office chair…

She walked a careful path just to get through the office without knocking over a stack of files.

There were hundreds of files….

Perhaps thousands…

Many weren’t even labeled…

She’d have to read each one to know how to file it.

She moved a stack of files off a chair, carefully  set it on the small conference table and began to sort through the folders…

“They didn’t hire me to be a file clerk”, she thought.  “It’s beneath me.”

I long to accomplish a great and noble task; but my chief duty is to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble – Helen Keller

“God wouldn’t want me to waste my time filing …”

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering-Romans 12:1

“What will I get for doing all this filing?”

We’d like to be humble…but what if no one notices? –John Ortberg

“This task is so small even God won’t notice.”

We ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed. –Brother Lawrence

Ever felt too big for the job you were asked to do?

Me too.

And then I remember the humble example of Jesus…

… who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant…Philippians 2:5-7

In the moments when we think we are above the task…

When humility is the furthest thing from our hearts…

When we aren’t interested in pleasing our earthly bosses…

Perhaps then we should remember Paul’s advice…

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.  Colossians 3:23-24
