Christian Devotional-Stories and Bible verses about the presence of God in our lives

Who Needs a Mature Faith?

She was almost three when I bought her the tricycle…

Tricycle of faithA motorcycle!” she said.

“Because you’re a big girl!” I replied.

She knew it was a bike…

But she didn’t know what to do with it…

She found the bell…and rang it… and rang it… and rang it…

Ringing the bell was fun…

Learning to ride would take work….

“Sit here”, I said and pointed to the seat.

She sat, and I placed her feet on the pedals.

“Push with this foot.”

She pushed.

The tricycle moved…

Her eyes lit up!

“Now push with the other foot.’

She pushed with one foot, and then the other… and the tricycle moved ahead…

“Ahead” might be the wrong word.

“Ahead” implies straight-line movement in a direction you want to go.

Maybe now was the time to teach her about steering…

It wasn’t long before she could pedal and steer at the same time…

“Stop at the corner!”

“Leave room for other people on the sidewalk!”

“Don’t cross the street!”

“Wait for me!”

As I recall those tricycle days, I think about my life as a Christian…

Of the times when I am perfectly happy “ringing the bell” of Christianity…

Proud to proclaim my faith…

But not eager to take the time to learn how to live it…

Of the times when I am so focused on where I am going, that I bump into others…sometimes with enough force to cause harm…

Of the times when I ignore God’s call to wait…

Of the times when I move off God’s path and into dangerous places…

When I remember those times, I am reminded of my dependence  on Him…

 and of his promise…

Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you ~ Hebrews 13:5

I pray that I will never stop seeking God with childlike awe and wonder…

And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.   Matthew 18:3

I pray That I will never stop seeking his strength for my weakness…

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9
